kopitalk-5kopitalk-1kopitalk-2

So last week, I sat down at one of my favourite old coffeeshops drinking kopi and eating fishball noodles with Jerome and my sister to chat about the upcoming exhibition that he has put together with his team. “Did you know this kopi uncle still does his take away kopi in a tin?” says Jerome.

For some reason, it makes me really happy to hear that. I’m not against modernization but much of the old Singapore is slowly fading away and the old generation find themselves bowing out in grace to commercial buildings. It’s not the actual old stuff that I hold dear to, but what it represents…a lifetime commitment of doing something so simple but doing it well and taking pride in something that you worked hard for and not just doing something because the boss asks you to.

To me, this is my cultural heritage. This is my good memory of Singapore, and if the physical coffeeshops fadeaway, i want to remember and pass down the tradition of doing things with commitment and pride even in the simplest and humblest of tasks. That is cultural heritage to me, this is the character of singaporeans and i never want to loose that.

The ROOTS exhibition will be held at the OLD SCHOOL (one of the last few times to check it out before it becomes state-abandoned-land) and many artists both from Singapore and in Asia will be show casing their own interpretation of the relevance of cultural heritage in developing their rootedness to their homeland through various forms of art. So do come on down ;)

basketball?

haha ken loves to play basketball and he’d always ask me along because many of our friends would head down to play too. but…well…haha :P so the very few times i ever pop by, i dribble a bit, i toss the ball here and there and once in a while i sink a ball in the hoop. then i spend the other half of the time sitting under the shade, drinking 100plus and looking through the camera…

family portraits hold a special in my heart…no wait, what am i talking about? I’m going to say that about literally every shoot i do haha because truly i strongly believe that people and relationships are the most important thing in life. sure, we have our struggles and we rub each other the wrong way but quickly get it settled, forgive and be forgiven because life’s too short to not love the best of each other (having said that, after i settle an exciting milestone for nicolethen studio, that i will share soon if everything goes well…i’m definitely going to schedule a family portrait session with my family, extended family if possible and my dearest fiance)

so i met up the kang family and their little dog snobbyy….i think…that’s the way you pronounce and spell the little guy’s name haha. and we had a good time! they’re a very sweet and helpful family, rushing to help me with the wobby step stool (that i put together myself, but apparently wrongly haha) and bringing my furniture around and into the cab. and yes, i practiced a teeny weeny bit of my chinese with grandma. haha just a teeny…they were very helpful translating most of it lol

# thanks ginny for giving me the opportunity & honour to photograph your family <3
